Moloka'i

By Alan Brennert

This lush novel is set in Hawai'i more than a century ago, is an extraordinary story of a little-known time and place in our history. It is a moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit and the strength of women.

Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl is quarantined due to a leprosy outbreak. Alone and separated from everyone she knows she is sent to a leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka'i to live her whole life.

This compassionate story covers a true piece of history and tells a lovely story about the survivors who experienced it first-hand. It is filled with warm and brave characters.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time

A Novel By Mark Haddon

This book is a quick read which makes it ideal for a book club selection. The story is told through the narrative of a boy with Autism. At times this book is witty and funny, but overall the work is intelligent, it evokes empathy, and it certainly broadens your views by way of a simple storyline told in a dramatic viewpoint. It was thoroughly enjoyable.
